    An Investigation Utilizing an Electrical Analogue of Cyclic Deicing of Hollow Steel Propellers with Internal Electric Heaters

    A study has been made of the heating requirements for the cyclic de?icing of hollow steel propellers fitted with two types of internal electric heaters. Solutions to the transient?teat?flow equations depicting the cyclic de?icing of propellers were obtained by use of an electrical analogy. The study showed the impracticability of using an internal tubular heater and illustrated the advantages of employing an internal shoe?type heater, which distributes the heat more evenly to the blade surface. The importance of minimizing the thermal inertia of the system was demonstrated, and the magnitude of reductions in the total energy requirement made possible through reductions in the heating period was indicated

    The reproductive ecology and migration habits of Chelonia are investigated. Efforts were made to determine if the turtle navigates by chemoreception and if sensory responses of the migrating animals could be electronically tracked through telemetry. Efforts were also made to: (1) explain why certain small islands or restricted areas of mainland shore are chosen by Chelonia as nesting grounds, even when located a thousand miles or more from the year round feeding grounds of the population; (2) identify guidance mechanisms used by migrants in their periodic open ocean travels; and (3) account for the so called lost year - the virtually complete disappearance of young sea turtles during their first year of life. It was suggested that turtle migration is aided by an olfactory mechanism, sun compass, and ocean currents. The tracking experiment was unsuccessful; the equipment was lost or damaged and stopped functioning after about two hours

    Laser Induced Fluorescence Studies of Electrostatic Double Layers in an Expanding Helicon Plasma

    We report the first evidence of a laboratory double layer (DL) collapsing in the presence of an instability studied by Chakraborty Thakur et al. 1 with the use of time resolved laser induced fluorescence (LIF) studies. Higher time resolution studies then provided the first statistically validated proof of the correlation between the ion acoustic instability and a DL. Time-frequency analysis in the form of time resolved cross power spectra and continuous wavelet transforms were used to provide insight into beam formation. The implications of this work is that in the creation of strong DLs in expanding plasmas for plasma propulsion or other applications may be self-limited through instability growth. Over the past decade, experimental and theoretical studies have demonstrated the formation of stable, electrostatic, current-free double layers (CFDLs) in plasmas with a strong density gradient; typically a result of a divergent magnetic field. In this work, we present evidence for the formation of multiple double layers within a single divergent magnetic field structure. Downstream of the divergent magnetic field, multiple accelerated ion populations are observed through laser induced fluorescence measurements of the ion velocity distribution function. The formation of the multiple double layer structure is a strong function of the neutral gas pressure in the experiment. The similarity of the accelerated ion populations observed in these laboratory experiments to ion populations observed in reconnection outflow regions in the magnetosphere and in numerical simulations is also described. If ion energization during magnetic reconnection also results solely from acceleration in electric fields, these observations imply a prediction that the ion heating, i.e., the broadening of ion velocity distribution functions, reported in magnetic reconnection experiments is more accurately described by a superposition of differently accelerated ion populations. Therefore, the ion gheatingh rate during reconnection should scale as the square root of the cube of the charge per unit mass (q3/m)1/2 for ions with varying charge-to-mass ratios. A new RFEA probe was benchmarked on the low pressure CFDL plasmas produced in WVU HELIX-LEIA. This work was the result of collaboration between the University of Tromso (UiT) and WVU. LIF was used to confirm the RFEAs ability to detect a beam when one was present. The RFEA was also able to detect the presence of a beam when LIF techniques were limited by metastable quenching. The probefs limitations in dealing with ion focusing are discussed as well

    An impressive amount of recent critical work has dealt with the philosophic element in Voltaire\u27s tragedies. His plays have been labelled a theatre of involvement and a theatre of ideas; they have been examined from the standpoint of propaganda and as tragedy. However,the focus of such studies has been primarily on Voltaire\u27s message or on the meaning of the plays, rather than on the dramatic structure he created to convey his philosophic concerns. Today, of course, Voltaire does not rank high either as an original thinker or as a dramatist. Nonetheless, his attempt to introduce his philosophic concerns into his tragedies continues to deserve serious attention. For even though his plays seem at times to be only weak imitations of Corneille and Racine, and his chief contribution to philosophy that of a popularizer, the effort he made to bring the two together was a real innovation in the French theatre. His involvement in both areas was intense and lifelong. Voltaire loved every aspect of the theatre--acting, designing scenery and writing. His intellectual activity was equally passionate and wide-ranging for he concerned himself with troublesome metaphysical questions as well as with the more practical problems of social and political reform. Given his love for both the theatre and philosophy, it was inevitable that Voltaire should seek to combine the two. Moreover, one of the most fascinating features of this marriage is the point at which philosophy and the theatre converge--the dramatic structure of these plays. As Robert Niklaus has noted, Voltaire\u27s treatment of philosophical themes in the tragedies is less complex than in his other writings, and it remained fairly constant throughout his long career as a dramatist. How Voltaire turned the theatre into a vehicle for his thought is perhaps as interesting as the message itself
